QR Codes Embedded into Sidewalk to provide tourist information.
Rio De Janeiro has embedded QR codes into their sidewalks to help tourists learn more about the city and more easily get to where they are going. The codes have been embedded into the city’s traditional mosaic sidewalks in the form of black and white tiles. When the tiles are scanned with a smartphone, a local map and information is provided to the user in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Brazil plans to embed roughly 30 QR codes at beaches, vistas and various historic sites around the city, helping Rio’s two million foreign visitors each year get around.
Posting to his blog, Kumar says his immediate response to taking on the position was “great opportunity but risky.” Following Dotcom’s approach, Kumar says he spent a number of weeks getting to know Mega “from every angle,” eventually deciding to take on the role because “the possibility of growing a significant Internet services company out of New Zealand is alluring.

BBC News - Web ‘re-defining’ human identity says chief scientist
Social networks such as Facebook and on-line gaming are changing people’s view of who they are and their place in the world, according to a report for the government’s chief scientist.
The report, published by Prof Sir John Beddington, says that traditional ideas of identity will be less meaningful.
One consequence could be communities becoming less cohesive.
This change could be harnessed to bring positive changes or if ignored could fuel social exclusion, says the study.
“This can be a positive force, exemplified by the solidarity seen in the London 2012 Olympics or a destructive force, for example the 2011 riots,” says the report.
